The Associate Degree in Broadcast Captioning serves students, employers and the deaf or hard-of-hearing community by providing quality captioners trained in a personalized environment, emphasizing ethics and respect for the consumer’s needs, service to the community and advancement of the profession through practical application.

 
Stautzenberger stenography students begin their careers here with tremendous focus on the technology that will improve their speed, accuracy and productivity in the real world. You will learn industry software from your first day with us, ensuring that you are well-rounded when you graduate and enter the work force. Our goal is to make sure you are comfortable performing those skills before you graduate. We use a personalized, career-focused approach to give you hands-on training, including a heavy emphasis on technical and communication skills—two of the skills most valued by employers. Our classes are held in spacious, well-lit classrooms and beautiful, intimate conference rooms, so you learn not only the substance of what a stenographer does, but the look and feel of the profession you are entering. You will also purchase a laptop, and use it daily in your classes. Our strong emphasis on technology ensures that you will be able to hit the ground running, with no fear of the software you may be asked to us!
 

Mission:

The Associate Degree in Broadcast Captioning serves students, employers and the deaf or hard-of-hearing community by providing quality captioners trained in a personalized environment, emphasizing ethics and respect for the consumer’s needs, service to the community and advancement of the profession through practical application.

 

Program Goals

  • To provide practical “hands-on” experience in the area of broadcast captioning.
  • To develop the students’ ability to generate captioning for live television broadcasts.
  • To develop students’ ability to generate captions for high school  and college classes
  • To promote ethical behavior and professionalism befitting the Captioning provider.
  • To provide career guidance and placement assistance for graduates after their externship.
  • To foster grammar and speed building skills.
  • To support the advancement of the Captioning profession.

Objectives

The curriculum is designed to provide students with a “hands-on” approach to gaining the skills and knowledge necessary to perform the function of a Captioning provider while understanding the professional and ethical responsibilities of the position.  Courses in Theory, Speed Building, Computer Aided Transcription, and Captioning train students for a career in Broadcast Captioning.  General courses in Geography and Vocabulary serve to supplement the students’ education, thereby contributing to their overall knowledge base.

This program leads to a position as a Broadcast Captioner. In this capacity, the Graduate’s duties may include providing captions to the deaf or hard- of-hearing television audience, providing captions for high school or college students’ classes, captioning legal proceedings in a courtroom, or reporting seminars or meetings that take place via the Internet (SOC code 23-2091).

To graduate, a student must: achieve a minimum grade of “C” in all CAP and STE classes; write three 5-minute literary broadcast material takes at 180 wpm with 96% verbatim accuracy; submit unedited captioned translation of four 15-minute programs on varied topics for course evaluation from the internship experience; and complete at least 25 verified hours of actual writing and 15 hours of research and dictionary preparation during the internship experience.

A Day in the Life of a Broadcast Captioner*

As a court reporter, you will create verbatim transcripts of speeches, conversations, legal Court reporters often move on to become broadcast captioners. As a broadcast captioner, you will link your stenotype machine to computers for real-time captioning, such as the closed captions available for television programs. As you key in the symbols, the spoken word is instantly transmitted into text on the screen.

 
Broadcast captioners provide a valuable service to the community. You may provide translation for Internet or phone connections. In an emergency, such as a tornado or a hurricane, people’s safety may depend upon the accuracy of information provided by a broadcast captioner.
