Sautzenberger College’s Veterinary Technician Program is one of the most respected programs in all of Ohio. Our respected faculty is comprised of practicing veterinarians  and registered veterinary technicians with expertise in lab animal & pocket pets, holistic, food animal, equine, emergency, shelter, and small animal specialty practice.

The Veterinary Technician degree is designed for the student who wishes to become a Registered Veterinary Technician. The Veterinary Technician Program at Stautzenberger College is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and serves to equip you with the skills necessary to become a vital member of a veterinary health team.  This  27 month  program  is designed to  provide  students  the  knowledge and skills  needed to work in a variety of veterinary clinical settings and related fields.

Program Mission

The mission of the Veterinary Technician Program is to prepare students to work in the veterinary health community and to help them to find their career match through our Career Placement Services Department. While our program emphasizes small companion animal medicine, the  student also learns large animal medicine and handling, and lab animal medicine. 

Our goal is to make sure you are comfortable performing all essential veterinary technical skills before you graduate. We use a personalized, career-focused approach to give you hands-on training in the veterinary field, including a heavy emphasis on technical and communication skills—two of the skills most valued by employers. At Stautzenberger College you will work wth equipment used in veterinaty health practices, such as our digital x-ray machine and in-house blood machines. The Veterinary Technician Program strives to integrate solid academic knowledge with hands-on technical skills so that you hit the ground running!

Our Objectives

To support and promote the veterinary medicine profession. The Veterinary Technician degree is designed for the student who wishes to become a Registered Veterinary Technician. The Veterinary Technician graduate is prepared to perform a wide variety of medical procedures, to produce diagnostic radiographs, and to serve as a vital member of the veterinary health care team. Courses in communications and other business and general studies areas furnish the graduate with additional skills for educating clients and for supporting the veterinary business environment.

Individuals training in this field may become veterinary technicians, certified veterinary technicians, registered veterinary technicians, licensed veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, veterinary nurses, veterinary research lab technicians or veterinary lab technicians (SOC Code 29-2056).

In addition, the program features an extensive externship that provides the graduate with a strong technical background. The program is designed to prepare students to take the Veterinary Technology National Examination (VTNE).

To become a Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of Ohio requires that an individual -

  • Be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program;
  • Take and successfully pas the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE); and
  • Apply to the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensihg Board (OVMLB) for licensure. As part of this license application procedure, the individual must submit to and pass a criminal background check. To graduate, the student must achieve a minimum grade of “C” in all VET courses.
     

A Day in the Life of a Veterinary Technician*

Veterinary technicians perform many of the same duties for a veterinarian that a nurse would for a physician, including routine laboratory and clinical procedures. As a veterinary technician, you may conduct clinical work in a private practice under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. You will perform various medical tests and treat medical conditions and diseases in animals. Also, check out this article from the New York Times published July 4, 2009.

On a typical day, you may:

  • Prepare an animal for surgery
  • Monitor anesthesia
  • Provide pet nutritional counseling
  • Provide behavior counseling
  • Perform laboratory tests
  • Prepare tissue samples
  • Take blood samples
  • Provide support to a veterinarian in a variety of tests and analyses
  • Obtain and record patients’ case histories
  • Expose and develop x-rays and radio-graphs
  • Provide specialized nursing care
  • Discuss a pet’s condition with the owners
  • Train new clinic personnel

You could also choose to work in a research facility, where you may:

  • Develop enrichment programs to improve animal welfare
  • Administer medications
  • Prepare samples for laboratory examinations
  • Record information on an animal’s genealogy, diet, weight, medications, food intake and clinical signs of pain and distress
  • Provide postoperative care

Job Outlook*

Employment of veterinary technologists and technicians is expected to grow 52 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations.

A growing pet population will require more veterinary technologists and technicians. In addition, many people consider their pets to be part of their family and are willing to pay more for pet care than in the past. Also, veterinary medicine has advanced considerably, and many of the veterinary services offered today are now comparable to health services for humans.
